Intel in 2007

Whenever I need a good laugh I visit 2 other blogs , Sharikou's and Scientia's blogs. The level of FUD and sheer ignorance is astounding.Then I thought , could you do better ? I'm an Intel fan , but I don't hold it as a religion.Besides , it's more interesting to take the devil's side , isn't it ?

2006 was the year when Intel woke up and put up a fight .And what a fight , it completly reversed the situation.It holds the lead in every market segment from notebooks to servers.
Merom , Conroe ,Woodcrest,Cloverton , Tulsa have been at the forefront of Intel's tidal wave.But how will things shape up in 2007 ?

AMD completly changed its strategy and goes for market share gains at any costs and this shows.Their latest quarter was bad and analysts took notice of that.AMD's hope is K8L.

There is no point in presenting again the improvements it brings over K8 , they are well known.More interesting is how will it fare against Conroe or should we say , what Intel has in mid 07.Then I stopped and said : wait a moment , according to the most recent roadmap , K8L will arrive in desktop form only in Q1 2008.

What will Intel have in Q1 2008 ? A mix of 65nm 1333FSB Conroes and the brand new launched Wolfdale , 45nm 1333FSB and 6MB L2.Add to this new chipsets with 1333FSB , PCI-E 2 and DDR3.
Are they enough to keep Intel on top ? Looking at David Kanter's analysis , I would say yes.

What about servers ? Who will take on K8L in Q3 07 ?
Cloverton coupled with a new platform , Stoakley.The highest bin Cloverton runs at 2.66GHz.It is possible for Intel to release a higher speed grade if need be.
In 4P server space , Intel will launch a new generation of Xeon MP servers.The processor used is Tigerton ( Cloverton version for MP ) and the platform is Caneland.The Clarksboro chipset it uses has QIB ( quad independent buses ) to alleviate BW bottlenecks.

Intel has a strong product roadmap for 2007 , no doubt about it.Everything is designed to ride the Core wave and take it to the next level.
